What it’s really like to be a founder - the fact vs the fiction

This episode of a Cup of Something Lovely was inspired by a request I had submitted by a lovely soul in one of the networking groups that I frequent. She asked - what’s it really like to be a founder… the myths vs the reality.

I absolutely LOVED this question and I think it’s such a healthy conversation to open up on the podcast today.

There are definitely a lot of preconceived ideas about what it’s like running a business, particularly when you’re in the early stages of entrepreneurship. So, we are getting into today - the good, the bad, and the downright untrue.

This episode was so much fun to record, as it really prompted me to sit and consider some of the rubbish that is regularly doing the rounds in the online business world.

From massive misconceptions about business growth and profitability, through to a few hard truths about the realities of entrepreneurship, I've really tried to give a balanced viewpoint throughout. In the end, I came up with seven core statements that I've heard in the business space, and I've gone through each one to confirm if it's fact or indeed in many cases, complete fiction.

We also had a really amazing question submitted for the latest instalment of The Creative Business Clinic. We're digging into how to undertake financial forecasting and planning in your business, particularly if you're considering taking the full-time leap.

I really hope you find this one useful - as always, I love to hear from our listeners so do feel free to reach out if this one really resonates with you.

"I think it’s a really important conversation to have with yourself before you embark on business ownership. Are you truly willing to put in the work? Are you committed to your business venture, with that unwavering level of dedication that it requires? Are you ready to make big and scary decisions, because when you run a business, the buck largely stops with you, especially if you’re running your entire operation single-handedly. Are you genuinely looking to scale a successful brand, or perhaps you’d be better suited to a creative hobby, or another outlet for your self-expression?"
